Material Worlds - A Working Method

Material Worlds is a participatory theatre method that brings together visual and performing arts. Working intuitively with materials and miniature objects, participants explore personal associations, ideas and experiences and transform them into imagined worlds and stories. The process moves from material exploration to spatial composition, from intuition to imagination, and from objects to theatrical expression. Materials and miniature objects become starting points for storytelling, scenography and performance, allowing participants to develop their own visual language and create worlds that can be shared, explored and brought to life through theatre. Material Worlds is rooted in my practice as a theatre maker, theatre educator, stage and costume designer, and visual artist. It builds on my long-standing interest in materials, spatial composition and the creation of theatrical worlds.
